Essentially why are people like Duncan Hunter, Mike Gravel, Ron Paul, Alan Keyes, Dennis Kucinich, etc. still in this thing? Why did people like Alan Keyes and Mike Gravel even run in the first place? Why do candidates that have no chance of winning continue to run, or in some cases run in the first place?
As to why they continue to run, they may do it in hopes of being picked as VP, or to get the eventual winner to adopt some of their policies by promising to have their delegates go over to them. As to why they run in the first place, remember that Bill Clinton had no chance at all when he first announced his candidacy. Anything can happen during the campaign. Why do candidates that have no chance of winning continue to run, or in some cases run in the first place?
No one knows if they have a chance or not until the voting is over. Look at Gullianni and Thompson, they were supposed to be front runners and neither has finished above fifth place.
They think their ideas are good enough to sway the voters.
because, even if they don't win hopfully they're good ideas can influence the debate
They are issues oriented and feel by staying in it allows voters a chance to hear more than rhetoric about problems the country faces whether that works or not I don't know but it's commonly cited as why
Don't talk bad about Ron Paul man, he does have a chance to win. If he doesn't, at least all of his supporters had a chance to make a statement and no matter what there will be change in America because of Ron Paul.
The size of their ego might have something to do with it.
Maybe for the recognition and maybe to make an important point. Just maybe they think they have something to give to American and win. Worse has won you know. carter knocked on doors. He came out of no where and won.
it increases their power many times in Congress.
Also, some keep running in hopes of a Vice President bid.
Because by running they can give exposure to issues they care about. Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich don't think they will win, but they are trying to get people thinking more about what they stands for.
The Media decides whose running. If the media likes the candidate, then they push for that candidate with their spot light. If they don't like the candidate, then they sweep them under the rug. Without media access... and more so media approval, your done before you begin. That is why you don't see much on these ';no chance'; candidates you are talking about. If the media was in fact unbiased and independent you would see each candidate equally and people who you think don't have a snowballs prayer in hell would actually have a chance.
The other reason is party loyalty. The more friends you have on the inside of your party, the more of a push you have to the front of the line. Haven't you noticed there is always just four people in the spot light... and only from 2 parties.
Lastly, and unfortunately these no chance people often have more ';better ideas'; than the goons that are pre-chosen for us yet those ideas never have a chance of coming true. Here are some examples
no more lobbyists
flat rate taxes and no loop holes
illegal still means illegal (that includes purgery as well as immigration)
transparent money contributions to elected officials
the list can just keep going on here....
